Trying to stack up Sarah Jessica Parker in the iconic role of Carrie Bradshaw against newcomer AnnaSophia Robb’s junior portrayal of Candace Bushnell’s SATC prequel is tough.
Set to debut in January 2013 on the CW as a weekly television show, the story winds back the clock all the way to 1984 when Carrie was just a freshman in high school. Unfortunately trying to translate the tales of 30-something women’s sex lives and dilemmas in Manhattan into a teenager’s too-good-to-be-true internship at Interview Magazine and swarm of free clothes, is a futile and frankly embarrassing faux pas. “The Carrie Diaries” is pretty much a flat attempt to grab some leftover “Gossip Girl” viewers and hopefully grab attention by riding the 10-years-too-late coattails of Sex & The City.
Early on, when asked about revisiting the series and potentially filming The Carrie Diaries, understandably the actual cast and creators of SATC was pretty dismayed with the idea. "My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33, and I took her to 43” said Producer Michael Patrick King at a TCA panel during the summer of 2011. "For me, the idea of going backwards and making her less evolved ... is something that I don't even imagine doing."
As for now, the show has only been scheduled for a pilot and not yet been picked up for an entire season, although they have been filming for several months in anticipation of a good reception. Check out the trailer for “The Carrie Diaries” below.
