Pinault who has a net worth somewhere north of $11.5 billion is the CEO of PPR, a multi national holding company, parent to luxury, lifestyle and sport divisions which include Yves Saint Laurent, Sergio Rossi, Gucci Group, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen. The Pinault family fortune also includes the famed Christie’s auction house, the Château-Latour vineyard in Bordeaux as well as French premiere league football team Stade Rennais. The billionaire, who has fathered two children from previous relationships and is now married to Salma Hayek, arrived in court ready for a fight with lawyers and an icy, indifferent demeanor.
Evangelista of “Supermodel’s don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000” fame, was in a relationship with Pinault from 2005 to 2006. When she became pregnant he suggested she get rid of the child. Insisting she wanted to raise the boy herself she went through with her plans and never asked a dime of him. Sounds too good to be true? It is, because Evangelista was relying on a very lucrative contract worth 1.8 million dollars to pay for her expenses. The contract however expired and was not renewed last year.
In court court Pinault admitted that he had only been with Evangelista a total of around seven days out of the four months he had dated her. “She was so happy to be pregnant, but it was not planned. I decided to stop the relationship at that point.” He added: “We were dating four months and I didn't even know her very much.”
Evangelista estimates the cost of her son’s welfare to be around $46,00 each month which includes body guards (note: he needs more than one) and 24/7 nannies. In court Pinault claimed that the reason he has not contributed regularly to the child's expenses is simply because she never asked, "I'm not going to pay money I'm not asked for".
Evangelista was asked by a judge prior to this court date how she justifies the amount of money per month she’s asking for, “When I work, it can be a 16-hour day. On days when I do not work, I am working on my image. I have to hit the gym. I have beauty appointments. I have to work toward my next job and maintaining my image, just like an athlete.”
Linda is certainly not suffering for lack of a luxe lifestyle however. She and the child, Augustine, live in a “stunning” penthouse in Chelsea and of course there is that other place she has in New York. The apartment she keeps in the Upper East Side is exclusively used for Augie’s “play dates”. As ridiculous as it may sound, Augie’s Chelsea walk-up is nothing compared to Valentina’s (his daughter with Salma Hayek) lavish lifestyle. To escape the publicity and stress of the trial, Salma has taken her daughter to a $58,000 12-day vacay to Bora Bora.
According to The Huffington Post, the first day of testimony included a detailed description of a $12 million mansion and Pinault discussing his brief breakup with Hayek before their 2009 marriage. The L.A. mansion is quite significant because he has put it in a trust for his daughter Valentina. Back when he and Salma were dating in 2007 when she became pregnant things went a bit sour between them. Course he had gone through an eerily similar situation with Linda just a year or so before. So as he tried to do the right thing and get engaged, but she ultimately broke off the whole thing and left him. Supposedly one of the concerns she had was financial security for herself and her child. Considering his Don Juan track record.
According to Pinault, that time period in 2008 had "created a high level of anxiety to my wife." Eventually he won her back, got married and put the mansion in Valentina’s name to reassure her of the child's welfare even if their marriage crumbles.
Evangelista who arguably has to feel a little pang of hurt over getting such a raw deal overall is asking for a similar show of fatherly love for her son Augustine. Today for the second day of the trial Pinault was questioned on his spending habits. Specifically how much if any has he spent on his son, even in such a basic way as his birthday. Pinault told the courtroom that he spent about $260,000 on “gifts” in 2012.
"How much of that, if any, of that was for gifts for Augie?" Evangelista’s lawyer, Beslow asked. Pinault acknowledged he had no clue, but that most of the $260,000 had been spent on himself. "I have a watch collection," he said. "It's for when I buy a watch for me," he said. As for Augie, did he get anything at all ? "I bought him a present for his birthday and for Christmas".
When Evangelista's lawyer pressed for an answer to see if the boy had received anything in October of 2012 for his birthday, Pinault claimed to not remember. As for Christmas? "It was -- FAO Schwartz," he fumbled. "I bought it online. It was a piano thing."
Pinault spends around $50,000 on taxes and loan payments on little Valentina’s mansion in L.A each month, you would think he could find a spare $100 or $200 for his other child’s brithday. Pinault’s lawyer contends that much of the monthly expenses Evangelista is asking for relate to herself rather than the child directly. "It is the classic case of someone trying to bootstrap herself to something that is alimony."
Linda’s lawyer obviously disagrees, “Ms. Evangelista is not looking to piggyback on the lifestyle of Mr. Pinault, She is looking for a continuation of the reasonable lifestyle of Augie.”
