Awards & Events- Day One At The 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet

The Cannes Film Festival is France’s answer to the Oscar’s, which is held in the south of France kicked off it’s ten day screening extravaganza yesterday. Aside from premiering unforgettable films that vie for the coveted Palme d’Or, it’s the amazing fashions that are paraded down the red carpet that have everyone hooked.

One surprising appearance was by newbie singer Lana Del Rey. The indie favorite who had a bag named “The Del Rey” created in her honor by Mulberry also attended the Met Gala this year along with designer Joseph Altuzarra. Jane Fonda looked absolutely stunning wearing a bronze shimmering Atelier Versace gown that showed off her enviable figure. If this is what 74 looks like, we just might have to hunt down some of her old workout tapes and start wearing a leotard again.

Two of the standout looks however came courtesy of Eva Longoria and Diane Kruger. Diane who is also a member of the jury this year, switched outfits twice. The first was a Versus Versace mini-dress worn for the jurors official photocall, that was cut-in at the waist and full of straps at the shoulder and sides. The second gown was full of minty one shouldered high drama and perfect for the evening portions of events. Aside from Kruger the list of jurors this year is quite an impressive one, including Andrea Arnold, Ewan McGregor, Hiam Abbass, Jury President Nanni Moretti, Emmanuelle Devos, Jean Paul Gaultier, Raoul Peck and Alexander Payne.

Eva opted for Marchesa, a label she has been wearing very constantly lately. The pale beige hued dress was quite a spectacle, laden with flowers, lace and a three foot train.

Pastels and pale colors seemed to reign supreme on opening day. Some of our favorites included Freida Pinto in Michael Angel, Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen and Eva Herzigova in a Dolce & Gabbana dress with lace and embellished crystal beading.

Of course just like the Oscar’s, even the red carpet at Cannes is not immune to the occasional whacked out look we would expect to see at a bad Halloween party. Case in point, Elena Lenina. The Russian model/author who is best known for appearing in a French reality show nine years ago was wearing an all purple ensemble and teased up purple tinted hair to match. Shock factor seems to be the option she chooses to keep her name in headlines and this year is no exception.
