Beauty Files- The Essential Checklist to Getting Your Bronzed Summer Glow On

The winter month’s bring with them plenty of holiday parties and loads of covering up under thick coats but all that is about to change. Its time to get your act together for summer and what better way to get ready than a few simple steps to avoid looking like Wednesday Addams when you hit the beach.

First off you must remember to keep up a great skin regimen at all times. That includes the months when those gams are covered as well, but in case you haven’t don’t worry there is plenty of time to play catch-up. Try to exfoliate your skin from face to tippy-toes twice a week or more if you have the time. Also invest in a great moisturizer. In your twenties and early thirties a light-weight one should do the trick but as the years roll on upgrade to a more heavy handed rich formula that will supply your skin with the right nutrients and keep those pesky lines at bay.

While the World Health Organization estimates that 30 million Americans still use indoor tanning beds, they really are just as bad as laying around the sun roasting away your skin cells. A new Yale study has found that tanning beds cause increased rates of early-onset basal cell carcinoma, the most common skin cancer. Tanning bed use increased the rates of BCC by 69 percent. This follows a University of Minnesota study that found that tanning bed users were 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma, the most deadly skin cancer. So it's not really a matter of whether you'll get cancer from using a tanning bed, but more like, "Which cancer will you get?" [VIA Allure]

The best thing to ever happen for bronze-loving women (and men) the world over is most definitely self-tanner. While they are widely available at everywhere from the local drugstore to department stores, for your face it is important to use a better quality formula that will not clog pores or stain your skin. Philosophy makes fantastic gradual self-tanner that becomes deeper as the days go by with more use, which will create a gorgeous glowing tan. ST. Tropez who also has a great range of self-tanners has a fantastic product that can be used on your body or face for a golden glow. On it’s own it will create a deep color and when simply blended with a moisturizer it can add a slight golden sheen.

Philosophy has yet another great product that is super popular, its daily energizing oxygen elixir which contains a blend of antioxidants that will clear and detoxify your skin of impurities. Of course the most important part of the warmer month’s is stepping up your SPF which you should already be using, even when there is no sun visible. To combat the harsh rays your best bet is to stay above a minimum SPF 30, ideally SPF 50 will create the best barrier from sun damage. To keep your skin breathing and clear from clogged pores use a lightweight oil-free sunscreen like Ole Henriksen’s “Protect The Truth” or any other brand you like.

It goes without saying that one of our all time favorite blushes that is pretty much universally flattering for all skin tones has to be NARS’s “Orgasm” shade. Paired with some gold and copper toned shadows, coral or berry toned lipsticks as well as a great water proof liner (imperative), your makeup arsenal should be set for summer.
