When Aussie designer Kym Ellery left her position as RUSSH Magazine’s market director to launch her label in 2007, Vogue had already come calling and that was just the beginning of the success Ellery would gain. Kym has described the fashion-forward woman that wears her clothing, "Ellery is for women who adore fashion but want to push the boundaries and strive to create their own signature".
In the Fall 2012 campaign shot by the designer herself, model Hannah Holman wore an awesome pair of cat-eye sunnies and showed off the exquisite collection sporting some twilight worthy fangs. Kym listed Sirens ("long liquid hair but with a certain mystique"), sea creatures, and '80s glam as some of her influences for her most recent collection.
Notables who have worn Ellery include Dita von Teese, Nicole Richie, Georgia Jagger, Eva Mendes, Natalie Imbruligia, Jess Hart, Abbey Lee, Catherine McNeil, Myf Shepperd, Natasha Khan (aka Bat for Lashes), Sarah Murdoch, Jodhi Meares, Jennifer Hawkins, Lara Bingle and actress Emily Barclay. The Ellery Fall 12’ collection which was shown at LMFE (Melbourne Fashion Festival) as well as the Hotel de Crillon in Paris this past month was full of the designers signature dark and decadent avant-garde aesthetic in a palette of black -duh- , mint green, beige and metallic gold. There were also hints of lace which also appeared on a few interesting pieces of headwear.
In a short interview with Harper’s Bazaar Australia the designer sat down to answer some questions at her Paris presentation.
Harper's BAZAAR: Describe your style?
Kym Ellery: "Masculine. Architectural. Comfortable."
HB: Favourite labels?
KE: "Right now I am loving Maison Martin Margiela, Comme des Garçons and Céline."
HB: What is your fashion week uniform?
KE: "An ankle boot, slim pant and a fabulous jacket of some sort; whichever my finger tips touch first. I am a sucker for a good jacket!"
HB: What are your staple items?
KE: "A sharp blazer and my egalite tee."
