Rihanna makes our list of fashionable faces because unlike so many other celebrities she wears the clothes, the clothes don’t wear her. When her first album was released in 2005 Rihanna took everyone by surprise with her powerful voice but her image was very much a sweet, generic ode to past pop singers. Baby doll dresses and long brown hair may have been what the executives at her record company wanted her to look like but Rihanna clearly had other ideas about her image.
When the video for “Umbrella” Featuring Jay-Z was released we saw a naked Rihanna covered in silver body paint, quite a departure but nothing compared to what was to come in the next few years. Gradually cutting her hair she went super short in 2008 (a look not every woman can easily pull off) which really showcased her beautiful face and strong jaw-line. At Glamour's Women Of The Year Awards in November 2009 the Barbadian native was honored for her charity work, and turning her own experiences into positive ones for young girls.
By 2010 the four-time Grammy winning singer started to really come into her own style-wise as well as musically. The lyrics became raunchy and let loose a more sexual grown-up side of Rihanna with an equally provocative look to match. She started experimenting with different hair styles going for a modern short almost bowl-cut hair style that was streaked platinum blonde and black. Fashion wise we started to see Rihanna wearing more avant-garde designer pieces, bright colors and clothes that showed off her figure. Next she moved on to a shockingly bright red hair color that was transformed into everything from massive curls to a exaggerated chignons from one day to the next.
During fashion week she is usually seen at the front row of cutting edge designers like Gareth Pugh. At the 2011 Grammy awards she was one of the best dressed women choosing a sheer paneled white dress over the more conventional dresses everyone else wore. There is clearly nothing conventional about Rihanna. After a few months of sporting the red locks as she was touring and promoting her new album “Talk That Talk,” we saw her go back to her darker hair but this time it was a blonde Ombré version.
Just this week we saw RiRi as she is referred to by her fans change her look yet again and dye her locks super blonde. Rihanna will be sitting front row at the Grammy’s this weekend along with Katy Parry as she is nominated in four categories, Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Loud; and two nods in Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "What's My Name?" (with Drake), and "All Of The Lights" (with Kanye West, Kid Cudi & Fergie).
Bringing a certain attitude to fashion choices she expresses her personality and wild cutting-edge style with no regard to fitting in with anyone else. Although she is sometimes questioned on her clothing choices, that certainly does not stop the 23 year old singer from continuing to stay true to herself and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
